Are you eligible for free rides for seniors to medical appointments?
Please call us to complete the application for eligibility as a senior in need of a ride to your medical appointments, grocery store, pharmacy, senior center and more. Your application will be reviewed by our office staff members and a home visit will be scheduled to meet you.
Our volunteer drivers take patients to routine doctor’s visits; we regret that dialysis and chemo treatments are not included in our program. The drivers go through an application process that includes a background check and then training. You can be certain that the drivers are caring, safe and reliable. They pick you up at your residence, take you to your appointment, wait for you while you’re being seen by your doctor, then drive you home.
Once you have become part of SWOOP, you contact us 7 to 10 days in advance to schedule your ride to your next doctor’s visit. Seniors eligible for SWOOP live in Southwest San Antonio in the zip codes shown on the map.
Client’s story about what SWOOP free services for seniors means to her
Consuelo Maldonado is 79 years old and appreciates the gift of each of the 79 years. “I’m proud that I am 79 and I never thought I would live to be this age. My daughter died at 48 and my mother was in her sixties.” She is also grateful that SWOOP provides her with services that enable her to maintain her health and enjoy life as she enters her eighth decade of life.
“SWOOP is good to me. They take me to my doctor appointments, and I would not be able to get there without them because I have an old car, rarely drive and the offices are far away from where I live. I have arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Getting to my appointments is important.”
“The volunteer drivers are polite. They always have a clean vehicle, and I am not scared. It is not like I am getting in the car with a stranger. They are nice and help me get in and out of the car. They help me buckle the seat belt and make sure I am comfortable. When it rains, they have an umbrella.”
“They also walk me to the doctor’s office so I don’t fall. What I like most is they wait for me at the appointment and then take me home. I don’t have to wait for someone to pick me up. And then they take me home and make sure I am safe inside before they leave. The volunteers take good care of me.”
Ms. Maldonado’s son lives in Austin and she depends on SWOOP. She likes the way she is able to live her life and advises younger people, “Take care of yourself and live a good life so you can live a long life. Stay out of trouble. Be nice to older people and help your grandparents while you still have them. You will become older.”

“My mobility isn’t what it used to be, so it’s nice to know I can count on my SWOOP volunteer to get me where I need to go. Not only has he become a friend, he’s a part of my family.”
